The use of timber for residential dwellings has been around for hundreds of years.
Of course, when left in their natural state timbers are affected by the environment. Untreated, the harsh Australian weather conditions will cause changes in the look of your beautiful new timber log building.
There are a number of top quality timber preservatives, varnishes, stains and paints available that will, if applied correctly, vastly reduce timbers splitting, discolouring, warping and undergoing other unwanted changes.
Most commonly the look and feel of a log cabin is what attracts most people to this type of building in the first place, so to make sure that this look is maintained for the longest possible time period must be seen as essential.
Your timber log building will be supplied to you in its raw state, untreated, to enable you to apply your preferred surface finish. However, a pest and fungi treatment MUST be applied to all timber surfaces, ideally before the individual timber logs are assembled, to ensure that even surfaces that will not be exposed to direct sunlight or rain are protected.
After some research “Timber Log Buildings Australia” decided to use and recommend a permethrin and zinc-naphtenate timber multi-purpose wood preservative called “TWA Clear Wood Preservative”. This wood preservative is ideally suitable for soft wood application, both indoors and outdoors, and is a fountain of youth for timber.
“TWA Clear Wood Preservative” is one of the most effective timber preservative known today. It is a deep penetrating amber coloured liquid absorbed into the timber.
TWA CLEAR WOOD PRESERVATIVE (CWP) is intended for the protection of timber and timber structures from degrade by wood destroying fungi and insects in above-ground situations. It is primarily intended for the protection of non-durable timbers (ie: oregon, meranti, pine, spruce etc) that may be used in building and joinery applications. It is a penetrating timber preservative and not a coating that remains on the surface. It is ideal for application to timbers used in window frames, external doors, gates, fences, posts, hand rails, outdoor furniture and any situation where exposure to rain, moisture, insect pests and weather may promote degrade. Like with most surface applied preservatives, periodical reapplication will be required.
CWP contains a fungicide (zinc naphthenate) and insecticide (permethrin) for a broad spectrum of protection. In particular the permethrin has been added to provide additional protection to timber from borers and termites. These constituents have been selected for their effectiveness in protecting timber and their low toxicity to humans. CWP also contains water repellent which contributes to dimensional stability of the timber.

Another extremely effective anti-termite treatment is "HOVEX Termite Defender". The advantage of this treatment is that it does not contain any water repellents, which could interfere with the application of water based (acrylic) top coat paints in the color of your choice. Well-known colors such as "SOLAGUARD" or "WEATHERSHIELD" are water based acrylics which are ideally applied to timber that has not previously been treated with water repellent agents of any kind.
So which termite treatment you choose purely depends on what finish you are planning to apply to the outer of your new timber log cabin.
